We do phonics every day revisiting sounds we already know and being introduced to a new sound each day. We try reading simple words known as cvc words (consonant, vowel, consonant) such as dad, cat, pit. We also try writing these simple words. Children are encouraged to write using our caterpillar, one armed robot, zig zag and ladder letters. Everyone was given these in their new children's packs but if you have misplaced them do let me know. It is important where possible to encourage children to write in a style similar to the school writing, starting at the anchor line and keeping pencil on the paper until the letter is formed- there are a few exceptions such as t and x.
We continue to count and order numbers up to 20 and use the language of 1 more and 1 less than a given number. In weekend news writing we are trying to mark make and verbalise what we have written. Some children are more reluctant to do this although some children are now starting to use initial sounds in their writing. There are still several children who are unable to write their names even using their own style of print. Please keep encouraging your children to do so at home. For pencil grip, the children know to pick it up like a crab with their pincers before putting their third finger on it.
Behaviour in the classroom is improving with children turning their choice round. The behaviour system is starting to make a difference. There are many children who make consistently good behaviour choices and these children are always rewarded for doing so. Some children are struggling with kind hands in the playground and these children are missing elements of their play by holding the MDSAs hand. We hope that this might make them think about actions and consequences.
Please can I just remind that lunch choices and juices need to be discussed with Laura in the kitchen. She is always happy to discuss any difficulties you think your children are experiencing. A reminder about free milk. This finishes in the week before your child turns five. They are often surprised and upset when they discover they aren't on the register anymore. If you want your child to continue with milk, it is important to check the web site.
Children finish school on Tuesday and I will be putting home learning in their plastic wallets so everyone needs to bring these to school as well as blue book bags.
